The flag of Andorra is a vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red of which the yellow stripe is slightly thicker (the ratio of bar with is 8:9:8) and topped with the principality's coat of arms.

Symbolism

The choice of colours for the Andorran flag reflects its political status, the county having been under Franco-Spanish protection since 1278. The flag thus combines the red and yellow of Spain with the colours blue and red and the pattern of the French flag. The coat of arms features the arms of the Bishops of Urgel (first quarter), the Counts of Foix (second quarter), Catalonia (third quarter and lastly Béarn (fourth quarter)[2].

Trivia

  • The flag of Andorra is not the only nation to use a vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red: Romania, Moldova and Chad use similar flags.
