The flag of Baltimore, Maryland, USA, is a distorted black and yellow checkerboard, with a black fimbriated-yellow shield shape, with a white silhouette of a building inside.

Symbolism[]

The yellow and black slanted checkerboard pattern is the banner of George Calvert (nicknamed Lord Baltimore, the city's namesake). The central building represents the city's Battle Monument, designed by Maximilian Godefroy in 1815 to commemorate the successful defense of the city against the British in The War of 1812.[1]

2004 NAVA survey[]

The flag scored a total of 7.64 on the 2004 NAVA City Flag Survey, and was ranked as the 18th best flag, behind Irving, and ahead of Colorado Springs.
