|Flag of Hawaii|
|Adopted||April 8, 1896|
|Designed by||Kamehameha III?|
The flag of Hawai'i has the Union Jack in its canton, with eight equal horizontal stripes taking up the rest of the flag, alternating white, red, and blue, starting at the top of the flag. It is the only flag in the US to feature the Union Jack.
The eight stripes represent the eight major islands of the Hawai'ian archipelago. The red, white, and blue are the colors of France and the United States. The Union Jack represents Hawai'i's friendship with the British.
- King Kamehameha I originally had the flag commissioned, and the current design is almost identical to that original design. The original idea was during the time of the War of 1812, Kamehameha was concerned about flying a flag with would alienate either the United Kingdom or the United States. This design was seen as a compromise between the flags of those two warring countries.
