Flag of Japan
Adopted August 13, 1999 [1]
Designed by (unknown) [2]
Proportions 2:3

The flag of Japan, also called Nippon or 日本国, has a white background with a large red circle in the center of the flag.

[edit] Symbolism

The design was taken from an ancient design, the designer of which is currently unknown. The red circle resembles the Sun.

The previous 1872 flag was in the proportions of 7:10, and the red circle was placed a very small length closer to the hoist.
