The first flag of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic was in use from 1940 until 1953. The flag is plain red with a hammer and sickle and the letters "LPSR" in the canton.
Symbolism[]
The red color of the flag represents communism and the Soviet Union, as does the hammer and sickle. The letters "LPSR" stand for "Latvijas Padomju Sociālistiskā Republika" which is Latvian for "Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic".
Trivia[]
- This and the second version of the flag of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic are illegal at public events in modern day Latvia.
