|Flag of Liberia|
|Adopted||July 26, 1847 |
|Designed by||a Liberian female committee |
The flag of Liberia consists of 11 equal horizontal stripes alternating red and white from the top, and a blue square canton the height of the first 5 stripes. In the center of the blue square is a white five-pointed star facing upward.
The flag was based off of the flag of the United States, since the United States was responsible for Liberians' independence. The eleven stripes represent the eleven signers of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Liberia. The star represents Africans and Liberians.
