Designed by (unknown)
Proportions 6:7 [2]

The flag of Niger consists of three equal horizontal bands of orange (top), white, and green with a small orange disk (representing the sun) centred in the white band; similar to the flag of India, which has a blue spoked wheel centred in the white band. [3]

Vexilollogists typically depict the flag of Niger as having aspect ratio 6:7. In practice flags with aspect ratio 2:3, 3:5, or 1:2 are often used. No information about which aspect ratio is officially preferred is available.

Symbolism

  • The top orange band of the flag of Niger represents the Savannah grasslands that lie in the northern regions of the Sahara Desert.
  • The white colour is symbolic of purity as well as innocence.
  • The green band stands for the country's rainforests and the Niger River.
  • The orange disc in the middle of the white band signifies the celestial sun as well as the eagerness of the state to protect its freedom.

Niger's flag is a tricolour, in common with other former dependencies and colonies of France.
