The flag of Ohio is a swallowtail design with five stripes alternating red and white. On the hoist of the flag is a blue pile with a red white-outlined circle in its center. Arranged horizontally symmetrical throughout the remaining area of the pile are 17 white five-pointed stars, with 4 of them near the peak of the triangle. It's the only U.S. state flag that is not rectangular.

Symbolism[]

The 17 stars represent Ohio's admission into the American Union as the 17th state. The 13 stars arranged away from the peak of the triangle represent the original 13 colonies of the United States.

The blue triangle represent the hills and valleys of Ohio, and the stripes of the flag represent the state's waterways and roads. The swallowtail design was a way to make the Ohio flag unique among other state flags in the United States.

The red white-outlined circle represents two things. First, it resembles a buckeye, which recalls the state nickname of Ohio, "The Buckeye State". Second, it resembles the letter O, the first letter of Ohio. [4]
