Adopted November 17, 1997 [1]

Proportions 2:3

The flag of Orenburg Oblast is a red sheet with the oblast coat of arms. The width/length proportion is 2:3; the height of the coat of arms is 3/5 of the flag width.

SymbolismEdit

The coat of arms is based on the coat of arms of Orenburgskaya Guberniya (Orenburg Governorate) of 1867.

ControversyEdit

The blue marten upon silver field is the emblem of Ufa, the capital of the neighbouring Bashkortostan, which seems inappropriate now.

On the original coat of arms of 1867 the crescent was turned upside down to symbolise the victory of the Orthodox Christianity (the cross) over Islam. To diminish the inequality of representation of religions, the crescent was turned correctly — as it's seen on minarets.
