SymbolismEdit

The flag is based on the flag of the Don Cossacks Army (1918): a horizontal tricolour of blue, yellow, and red. The colours of the Cossack flag stood for the three ethnic groups inhabiting the land of the Don River:

  • The blue (cornflower): the Cossacks of the Don.
  • The yellow: Kalmyks (see Kalmykia).
  • The red (crimson): the Russian peasant. [2]
