The unofficial flag of Wallis and Futuna, featuring a red saltire in a white square, was adopted in 1985. Its official flag is just the flag of France.

Symbolism[]

The four triangles which form a square are the three native chiefs and the French administrator, who govern the islands. The flag of France is placed in the lower left corner, as France is the colonial power that controls them. It is also derived from the former unofficial flag, that looks exactly the same, save a larger white cross where the four triangles would be.
